Lip Flip vs Lip Filler?

A question I get asked a lot is, what is the difference between a lip flip and lip filler? There are quite a few differences between the two, but the most important aspect is that most of time they are used in conjunction.

Lip flip is a neuromodulator such as botox or dysport that is injected into the top lip. This relaxes the muscle of the lip and allows it to drop and roll out. Many times when we talk or smile our lip tissue curls back into our lip, a lip flip helps to prevent this from happening. Lip flips are a great aesthetic treatment for patients with strong lip muscles and small lip tissue. Lip flips will give a subtle volume enhancement but will not change the shape of your lips. The average amount of units that are injected into the lip vary per patient, but it ranges between 6-8 units. It lasts anywhere from 2-3 months depending on the patients metabolism. Lip flips can make it feel funny to talk for a week or two while the collateral muscles are getting accustomed to this newly relaxed lip muscle. The most common difficulty is sucking on a straw, this is only temporary! When I am building very small lips this treatment is what I recommend for my patients first before filler.

Lip Filler is a hyaluronic acid gel that is injected into the lips to create an enhanced volume and achieve a beautifully natural aesthetic shape. We naturally have hyaluronic acid in our lips and our skin, but unfortunately, as is everything, we loose it as we age. You will be surprised to know we start loosing our beloved collagen and elastin in our 20's! The goal of lip filler is to create a structure to enhance the shape but in a natural and beautiful way. Longevity of the product depends on multiple factors such as your metabolism, how much filler you have had, how long in between treatments, etc. Attaining beautiful natural lips is a delicate balance. It's important to not come back too early to enhance volume, but important to also not wait too long or you won't build to your desired volume. Always talk with your injector and establish a timeline for your lip goals.
